Step-by-Step: How to Design Your Own Sweater

1. Choose Your Product Type

Start with the classic crewneck sweater — our top seller thanks to its timeless appeal and unisex fit. If you're going for a relaxed, streetwear-inspired vibe, try the relaxed fit crewneck. For something more refined and fashion-forward, the cardigan is a strong second-best seller and a standout in custom merch. Other popular options include vests, pet sweaters, and knit tote bags. All Knitwise products are made to order and require no inventory.

2. Understand Design Best Practices

Before diving in, review the jacquard knitting design tips to avoid common mistakes:

1 Pixel = 1 Knit Loop

Every pixel you place in your design literally becomes one knitted loop in the final sweater. For example, a single black pixel translates to one loop of black yarn on the machine. This means:

  • Be intentional with every pixel you place. Watch out for stray pixels that may appear as unwanted specks.

  • Clean art with high resolution yields clearer results than fuzzy or compressed images. Recommended image size is 1500*1500px at 150dpi.
Clear, high-resolution artwork producing a crisp, well-defined indexed image suitable for knitting.
Blurry, low-resolution artwork leading to a distorted or unclear indexed image due to poor input quality.

Avoid Designs with Too Many Colors

Knitwise jacquard sweaters support up to 4 yarn colors per design, including the base and trim. When designs contain too many distinct colors—such as multicolor photos or detailed illustrations—the image’s essence is often lost in translation. Due to color reduction during indexing, some color areas may not be represented at all, depending on the color reduction mode chosen.

That said, variations within the same color tone (e.g., light blue and navy) can still work beautifully when thoughtfully grouped. Stick to cohesive color palettes and simplified graphics for crisp, professional results.

Use High Contrast Colors & Opt For Darker Base Colors

Colors that seem distinct on screen may blend in the final product due to the way jacquard knitting binds yarn loops. High-contrast designs—think light on dark or vice versa—tend to appear crisper and more legible when knit.

We also recommend choosing a darker base color (for the sweater body and sleeves), as lighter bases are more prone to showing stretch or seam distortion.

Use Trim Areas for Bold Accents

The collar, cuffs, and hem (aka trim areas) use a ribbed knitting structure, different from the jacquard knit used on the body. This offers a great opportunity to add bold, contrasting color accents that frame and enhance your overall design.

Try using high-contrast colors or complementary tones on these trims to make your design pop from edge to edge.

3. Choose Your Design Method: Online Design Maker or Photoshop

Knitwise offers two ways to create your design:

  • Design Maker Tool
Upload images of logos, illustrations, or patterns to create your designs. It automatically reduces your artwork to a 4-color palette based on the nearest yarn matches. The tool offers both solid and pixelated color reduction modes to suit your aesthetic preference. You can preview your design in real-time and adjust placement, color mapping, and scaling. Read the full guide here.

  • Photoshop on Knitwise BMP Template (pro mode):
Download Knitwise’s BMP templates to create highly detailed designs using Photoshop. This method is ideal for artists who want pixel-level control or are creating fine, intricate graphics. Read the full guide here.

4. Choose Up to 4 Yarn Colors

You can select up to 4 yarn colors for your design, including those used for the base, collar, and hem. This is a constraint of jacquard knitting. The design tool automatically maps your image colors to the closest available yarn shades. Knitwise currently offers 36 yarn colors. Learn more about jacquard knitwear

Choose between:

  • Solid mode — for clean color separation and sharp, defined shapes (great for logos and vector art)
  • Pixelated mode — for blended, natural-looking transitions (ideal for photos and gradient-heavy designs)

Tips:

  • Check panel boundaries to avoid artwork overlapping from front to sleeves or back
  • Use strong light/dark contrast to improve visibility

5. Design for Multiple Sizes

Jacquard designs may shift in appearance depending on sweater size. Knitwise’s auto-scaling feature makes it easy to:

  • Maintain visual balance across sizes from XS to XXL
  • Align key artwork like logos or text
  • Prevent unwanted distortion across seams or edges

6. Order a Sample

Before you go live, we strongly recommend ordering a sample. This is the most reliable way to ensure your sweater looks and feels exactly how you envisioned. You'll be able to test the fit across sizes, see the true color and texture of the yarns, evaluate placement accuracy, and take high-quality product photos for your store or marketing materials.

7. Launch in Your Store

Knitwise integrates seamlessly with Shopify and Order Desk. Once your sample is approved, push your product live to your storefront. Knitwise only charges when an order is placed, so there’s no upfront cost or risk.

We also partner with Fourthwall, allowing creators to design, sample, and sell directly through their platform. Start your journey with Fourthwall here.
